UEFA give Real Madrid permission for rare stadium request ahead Man City game

Real Madrid have been granted permission by UEFA to play Manchester City under a closed roof at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Los Blancos welcome Pep Guardiola’s side to the Spanish capital on Tuesday evening for the first leg of a mouthwatering Champions League quarter-final.

Manchester City were comprehensive winners over Madrid in last year’s semi-final and Carlo Ancelotti’s men have revenge on their minds this time around.

While the Italian is playing his part in preparing the 14-time European Cup winners for battle, senior figures at the club have gone all out to ensure conditions are favourable for the home side.

That includes ramping up the decibel levels by closing the roof at the revamped Santiago Bernabeu.

Club chiefs are hoping fans will ramp up the pressure on City with a capacity 80,000 expected to attend on Tuesday evening.

Fans have been advised to dress in all white for the game to create a carnival atmosphere as Madrid hope to gain an upper hand ahead of next week’s return leg in Manchester.

The Santiago Bernabeu has undergone a dramatic transformation over the last couple of years, with the installation of a state-of-the-art retractable roof being the most eye-catching addition.

The roof was used for the first time during the last-16 clash with RB Leipzig last month.

City drew 1-1 in the first leg of last year’s pulsating semi-final before the second-leg demolition at the Etihad.

City boss Guardiola believes the two sides could serve up a classic but warns that previous encounters between the sides will count for nothing.

"It looks like a classic between them and ourselves," he said. "It's the same managers, but we have new players and they have new players, so it will be a completely different game."

"We have a little advantage with the second leg at home where we play strong and confident, but we have to play 90 minutes here and the games are long for different reasons."

"Everybody knows the strengths from transitions they have with Rodrygo, [Jude] Bellingham, [Federico] Valverde, Vinicius."

"We cannot come here just to control the game, we have to come here to try to hurt them, to punish them, to let them know we are here to score the goals."

"We are talking about Real Madrid, their ability to control many aspects of the game, but we have to impose our game with who we are."
