Real Madrid suffer huge setback as key defender becomes a doubt for Atletico clash

Real Madrid’s preparations for the Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Atletico Madrid have been hit by an unexpected setback, with Antonio Rudiger now a serious doubt for the crucial encounter.

According to a recent revelation made by Miguel Angel Diaz, the German defender is dealing with discomfort in his knee, putting his availability for the match in question.

The timing could hardly be worse for Xabi Alonso’s side. Real Madrid completed their final training session on Wednesday in Jeddah, and until the update on Rudiger, the only confirmed high-profile absentee was Kylian Mbappe.

The French forward did not travel with the squad after suffering a sprained left knee and remains in Madrid undergoing treatment.

Now, Rudiger’s situation has added a new layer of concern.

If the German centre-back fails to recover in time, everything points towards Dean Huijsen and Raul Asencio forming the central defensive partnership against Atletico.

While both youngsters are highly rated within the club, throwing them into a high-pressure Super Cup semi-final against a physically demanding opponent represents a significant risk.

Real Madrid are already stretched thin at the back. Eder Militao continues his recovery from a long-term injury, while Trent Alexander-Arnold is also unavailable.

In that context, losing Rudiger would be another blow to an already injury-hit squad, as his importance to this Real Madrid side cannot be overstated.

The German international has been one of the few constants in a defence plagued by fitness issues, starting seven of the club’s last eight matches across all competitions.

His leadership, physicality, and ability to thrive in big games have made him a cornerstone of the back line this season.

Beyond his individual qualities, Rudiger’s potential absence would also significantly impact Madrid’s defensive depth.

Atletico Madrid are known for their intensity, aerial threat, and ability to punish even the smallest defensive lapses.

Facing them without one of the team’s most reliable defenders would force Real Madrid to adapt quickly, both tactically and mentally.
