Real Madrid, Manchester United, and PSG will reportedly battle it out for 26-year-old Bayern Munich star Dayot Upamecano.
Dayot Upamecano’s future at Bayern Munich is becoming increasingly uncertain, and some of Europe’s biggest clubs are already circling. With contract talks at an impasse, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Manchester United are all said to be monitoring the Frenchman’s situation closely.
Bayern Munich had initially hoped to secure Upamecano’s long-term future without fuss. The French defender, whose current deal runs until 2026, was expected to renew months ago. However, negotiations have stalled over salary demands. Upamecano currently earns a reported €16 million per year, but is said to be pushing for a higher package.
The delay has left Bayern Munich in a familiar and uncomfortable position. In 2021, the Bavarians failed to extend David Alaba’s contract, losing him to Real Madrid on a free transfer. The same scenario could now play out again with Upamecano, who has recently been offered to clubs.
According to Sport Bild, Real Madrid are understood to be weighing up a move that mirrors their swoops for both Alaba and Antonio Rudiger in recent years. Interestingly, both of those defenders also see their contracts expire in 2026. Alaba would be 34 by then, while Rudiger would be 33, leaving Madrid with a potential double gap in central defence.
Upamecano, still only 26, would therefore represent both a long-term successor and a natural fit for Los Blancos’ defensive rebuild. Reports suggest Real Madrid could attempt to lure him with the prospect of joining on a free in 2026, combined with a lucrative signing bonus, the same formula they have used successfully before.
Real Madrid are not alone in their pursuit. Paris Saint-Germain are also watching the situation, keen to strengthen their defensive line with another French international. PSG’s financial power makes them a credible threat should Bayern Munich ultimately decide to cash in before risking losing Upamecano for free.
Manchester United, meanwhile, are undergoing a rebuild under Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese manager has made it clear he wants more solidity at the back, and Upamecano’s experience at both Bundesliga and Champions League level makes him a natural target. With Raphael Varane no longer at Old Trafford and Harry Maguire approaching the twilight of his career, Manchester United see Upamecano as a possible replacement with similar pedigree.
For Bayern Munich, the decision is delicate. Sell now and they risk losing a cornerstone of their defence in the middle of a title push. Hold firm, and they could watch another star depart for nothing in 2026. Either way, the coming months are crucial. The Frenchman remains a key figure in Munich, but with the likes of Real Madrid, PSG, and Manchester United circling, the pressure is mounting on Bayern to act decisively.
