Injury scare to versatile superstar leaves Real Madrid worried after Super Cup defeat

Real Madrid’s 2-3 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final produced plenty of debate, but beyond the goals and the result, the biggest worry for Los Blancos revolves around the fitness of Federico Valverde.

The Uruguayan midfielder, one of Madrid’s most dependable performers this season, left the pitch with visible discomfort, casting doubt over his availability for the crucial weeks ahead.

The warning signs were clear during the second half of the final. After making a powerful sprint down the left flank to support a counter-attack led by Vinicius Jr., Valverde suddenly slowed down and signalled to the bench.

As he jogged back into position, he made it clear that he could not continue.

The issue appeared to be discomfort in his right knee, and rather than risking a more serious injury in a high-intensity Clasico, Valverde opted to come off.

While he was able to walk off the pitch without assistance, the concern among the coaching staff was evident.

Medical tests scheduled for today will now determine the exact extent of the problem.

This potential injury could not have come at a worse time for Real Madrid, who are already dealing with a long list of fitness issues.

Antonio Rudiger missed the final after picking up an injury against Atletico Madrid, while Ferland Mendy suffered another setback just as he was pushing for rhythm.

For Valverde, this situation is particularly concerning. Known for his durability and relentless work rate, he has rarely been sidelined for long periods in previous seasons.

However, the heavy workload of this campaign, after injuries to Dani Carvajal and Trent Alexander-Arnold, appears to be taking its toll.

As such, his latest knee issue is his fourth injury setback of the season.

Notably, in August, a muscle strain ruled him out of a pre-season friendly. November then brought a muscle injury in his right leg.

In December, an ankle contusion sidelined him for 18 days. Now, with another problem emerging in January, questions are being raised about fatigue, recovery, and squad management.
